The Adelaide Happy Wanderers Bushwalking Club was started in 1982 by Keith Herbig, Bart van der Wel and David Trebilcock.
Bart van der Wel took over the organisation of the club and walkers met at his place for many years for coffee before leaving on the walk. The club has relied on walkers offering to lead walks over the years and the number of walkers have ranged from three to twenty-five. In the early programmes the club included day and moonlight walks, weekend trips, canoeing and rock climbing.
In 1992 the club celebrated 10 years of existence with an overnight walk to the Mt Lofty Youth Hostel.
The club continuous to be one of the longest operating gay social groups in Adelaide.
In May 2002 the club celebrated 20 years existence with an overnight stay at the Mylor YHA followed by the usual walk on the Sunday.
During 2002 there was a significant number of new walkers.
